(BRUSSELS2) The European Parliament - meeting in plenary session in Strasbourg - adopted, on Thursday 17 July, a resolution on the conflict which resumes in the Middle East (as well as in Iraq - see separate article) asking for a stronger involvement of Europeans on this file.

Resume trading

In this text adopted by 459 votes in favour, 113 votes against and 60 abstentions, MEPs ask " the immediate cessation of rocket attacks on Israel and the end of Israeli military actions against Gaza ». They also call on Israelis and Palestinians to resume the " direct peace talks » and encourage important regional actors, such as “ Egypt and Jordan, to maintain their efforts to calm the situation ». All " both Israeli and Palestinian citizens have the right to live in peace and security ».

A stronger involvement of Europe

These negotiations must lead to " concrete results and the European Union must play a more active role in this respect”, underlines the resolution. A leitmotif for the European Parliament, which is campaigning for greater European involvement. " EU foreign policy chief and member states must do more to support a ceasefire agreement and to ensure an immediate end to all acts of violence threatening civilians ».
