[Portrait] The new Maltese government: a reshuffle necessitated by business

(B2) Prime Minister Robert Abela (S&D) presented his new government on Wednesday (30 March) following his victory in Saturday's elections

This follows Labor's victory in the general election on Saturday (March 26). Victory acquired at the cost of a participation rate down seven points compared to 2017 (85,5%) as reported by the island's daily newspaper. Malta Today.

Interior

Byron Camilleri remains Minister of the Interior, a position he has held since 2020. He is also in charge of all security and defense issues. NB: The island does not have a ministry of defense, this being ensured by the security forces.

The minister is a lawyer by profession, having received his doctorate in law from the University of Malta in 2012. He was successively mayor of Fgura (2011-2016) then a member of the Maltese Parliament since 2017. He became the government whip there in Parliament.

Foreign and European Affairs

Former roads minister Ian Borg moves to Foreign and European Affairs replacing Evarist Bartolo. Note that previously in this position (2017-2020) there was Carmelo Abela. He had been denounced as a suspect in the murder of Caruana Galizia, as an accomplice in the robbery of the HSBC headquarters in 2010, indicates Malta Today. Complicity that he always denied.

A doctor of law from the University of Malta, Ian Borg was Minister of Transport since 2017. Just before being appointed Minister, he served as Parliamentary Secretary to prepare for the Maltese Presidency of the EU and for European funds for four years. He also served as mayor of Dingli from 2005 to 2013.

Justice

Another desire to renew the government and to lock down business. Edward Zammit Lewis, who was friends with Yorgen Fenech, a suspect in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, is replaced at the Ministry of Justice by Jonathan Attard.

A doctor of law from the University of Malta, and a lawyer by profession, Jonathan Attard has previously worked with government and parliament, notably during the work to amend the Maltese constitution. Having entered parliament in 2021 via a co-optation mechanism, he was elected deputy in March 2022.

Other positions

Former European MP (2014-2020) Miriam Dalli arrives, taking the Environment and Energy portfolio, essential on the island. She is a doctor of law, graduated from the University of Malta.
