The 28 in favor of a renewal of EU-Africa relations

(B2) The Foreign Ministers of the European Union, meeting in Luxembourg on Monday 19 June, welcomed the adoption of the communication for a new impetus for the Africa-EU partnership. For the 28, there is a " genuine strategic interest in deepening and strengthening its long-established partnership with Africa ».

Conclusions that come into play in order to prepare for the Africa-EU Summit, scheduled for November, and in a way endorse the joint communication of the Commission and the High Representative of the Union on "The Africa-EU partnership: renewed momentum" published on 4 May.

A new political relationship

Using the terms of the communication, the ministers insist on the importance of a " truly strategic and equal political relationship with Africa ". For this, a " stronger mutual commitment ", including on issues of global governance, through a " frequent political interaction and an increased number of contacts with people”, as well as increased cooperation in the international arena.

Peace and security: key pillar of the European effort

peace and security” will remain at the center of EU cooperation with African partners ». To complement and facilitate African efforts, the 28 undertake to maintain their support for the "  capacity building of African states and organizations, including through the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) ". For this, EU instruments must be made " more flexible, responsive and better suited to support these efforts ».

Call for African responsibility for its security

The 28 do not hide their desire to see Africans take charge of their own security. But they also insist on financing it. " The EU looks forward to and welcomes the ongoing work to increase African funding for peace and security state the findings.
